The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has dismissed the poll conducted by the Department of Political Science at the University of Ghana that predicts a wing for Nana Akufo - Addo in the 2020 elections. At a press conference led by NDC National Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi, the opposition party questioned the credibility of the speakers involved in the poll.
"A few people were influenced by the NPP politicians. They sat in the confines of their offices and generated a report that is what has been published. That is the information we have received, "said Mr. Gyamfi. Aside from the allegations, the NDC also said that the survey results cannot herald the results of the upcoming elections.
"Assuming without admitting that this survey was authentic and well done, it is just a survey. Even if what they have done is good research work, it does not necessarily mean that it will be done because the polls are not sacrosanct. "
The poll predicted a 51. 7 percent victory for the current New Patriotic Party (NPP), while the NDC followed with 40. 4 percent of the total votes cast.
This would represent a drop in the numbers for both parties starting in 2016. Nana Akufo - Addo of the PNP obtained 53. 6 percent of the votes in 2016, while John Mahama of the NDC, then the incumbent, obtained 44. 7 percent of the valid votes cast.
Ghana Union Movement (GUM) candidate Christian Kwabena Andrews ranked third in the poll with 1. 4 percent.
If this figure turns out to be accurate, this would be the highest percentage for a candidate outside of the NDC and NPP since 2004 when Edward Mahama of the National People's Convention won 1. 9 percent of the valid votes cast.
According to the Department of Political Science of UG, the survey included 11, 000 respondents throughout the country. The researchers say that 80 percent of those surveyed said they would vote based on the campaign message. Of that number, 52. 5 percent said they would vote for Nana Akufo - Addo, while 40. 9% said they would vote for John Mahama. The 2020 general election is a few days away from being kicked off.
